If you’re looking for a creative way to bring history and literature to life, Epic Heroes & Heroines of the Middle Ages is a wonderful addition to your homeschool resources. This activity book combines crafting, storytelling, art, and history into one engaging project, and it ended up being a hit with both my younger children and my teens.

Finding activities that appeal to a wide range of ages isn’t always easy, but this one managed to do exactly that. My younger kids loved coloring, assembling, and playing with the figures, while my teens enjoyed learning about the legendary characters and discussing their stories. It quickly became one of those projects everyone wanted to try.

In fact, Miss 15 very busily laminated and assembled several dolls for her younger sisters.

I also recommend these supplies:

  • Mini brads
  • Mini scissors (these make it easier to cut in tiny spaces; these are the ones we used – they are sharp and make cutting small/many projects so much easier!)
  • Laminating pouches (optional but they make the paper dolls so much sturdier)

What Is Epic Heroes & Heroines of the Middle Ages?

Epic Heroes & Heroines of the Middle Ages is a cardstock activity book that allows children to create movable paper figures based on famous heroes and heroines from medieval literature and legend.

The book includes:

  • Beowulf
  • Mulan
  • Sinbad
  • Scheherazade
  • King Arthur
  • Queen Guinevere
  • Rostam
  • Don Quixote
  • Ivanhoe
  • Robin Hood
  • Maid Marian

Each character is included in both a full-color version and a black-and-white version that children can color themselves. Once assembled, the figures have movable limbs, making them fun for imaginative play and storytelling.

In addition to the craft component, each character includes a short biography that introduces children to the story behind the legend.

What We Thought

The first thing that stood out to us was how much fun the kids had building the characters.

My younger children immediately wanted to color and assemble the figures, while my teens spent time reading about the characters and comparing their stories. It sparked conversations about legends, folklore, and famous heroes from different cultures without feeling like a formal history lesson.

One of my favorite things about this activity was that it naturally combined learning with creativity. The kids weren’t simply reading about medieval legends—they were interacting with them.

After building several figures, they began acting out scenes and creating their own adventures. The characters quickly became more than just a craft project.

Our Favorite Tip: Laminate the Pieces

The cardstock pages are already fairly sturdy, but we decided to laminate the pieces before assembling them.

I’m so glad we did.

Laminating made the figures significantly more durable and helped them hold up to repeated play. Since multiple children were using them, the extra durability was definitely worth the effort.

If you plan to use the figures for storytelling, display them in your homeschool room, or save them for younger siblings later on, laminating is something I highly recommend.

Educational Benefits

While the book feels like a craft activity, it actually incorporates several educational subjects at once.

History

Children are introduced to famous figures from medieval legends and literature. Many kids have heard names like King Arthur or Robin Hood but don’t know much about them. The biographies provide a simple introduction that can spark further interest.

Literature

Several of the characters come from classic stories that have influenced literature for centuries. This makes the book a great supplement to literature studies or read-alouds.

World Cultures

The characters come from a variety of traditions and cultures, giving children exposure to stories from different parts of the world.

Fine Motor Skills

Cutting, assembling, coloring, and fastening the movable parts all help strengthen fine motor skills.

Creativity and Storytelling

Once the figures are assembled, children naturally begin creating stories and adventures. This imaginative play helps strengthen communication and storytelling skills.

What Ages Is It Best For?

The publisher recommends the book for ages 6–12, but I found that it appealed to a broader age range.

My younger children enjoyed playing with the dolls, while my oldest enjoyed assembling them and appreciated the historical and literary aspects of the characters.

Younger children may need some assistance with cutting or assembling the pieces, but older elementary students should be able to complete most of the project independently.

Because there are multiple characters to choose from, it also works well for families with several children.

How We Used It in Our Homeschool

We used this book primarily as a fun enrichment activity, but it could easily be incorporated into a larger unit study.

Some ideas include:

  • Pairing the characters with library books
  • Studying medieval history alongside the activity
  • Using the figures for narration exercises
  • Acting out stories after reading them
  • Creating displays for a homeschool room
  • Comparing heroes and heroines from different cultures

The figures also make great conversation starters and can help reluctant learners become more interested in history.

Is Epic Heroes & Heroines of the Middle Ages Worth It?

Absolutely.

What makes this activity book stand out is that it goes beyond a simple paper craft. Children learn about legendary figures, engage with history and literature, practice creativity, and end up with something they can continue using after the project is complete.

The combination of educational content and hands-on fun kept both my younger children and my teens engaged, which is not something every homeschool activity can accomplish.

If your children enjoy history, legends, medieval stories, paper crafts, or creative projects, there’s a good chance they’ll love this book.

Final Thoughts

Epic Heroes & Heroines of the Middle Ages is one of those rare homeschool resources that successfully blends education and entertainment. The characters are interesting, the artwork is beautiful, and the hands-on format makes history feel more memorable.

The fact that my teens and younger kids both enjoyed it speaks volumes. Adding lamination made the figures even more durable, and the kids have continued using them long after the initial assembly was finished.

For families looking for a unique Middle Ages activity, a literature extension, or simply a fun history-themed craft, this book is an easy recommendation.
