Playing in the snow is such a fun activity for kids but since we don’t get any snow in our area, we decided to bring the snow to us.
If you can’t play in the snow or simply want some indoor “snow” play, snow playdough is just about the next best thing. 🙂
We even added kid-safe essential oils which made our snow playdough smell so fresh and wintery and absolutely heavenly! This has officially become one of our favorite playdough scents.
For the full recipe, as well as play ideas, continue reading below.
What You’ll Need
- A batch or two of our one-pot playdough
- Plant Therapy kid-safe holiday blend essential oils {snow flurries}
- Snowflake cookie cutter
- Gems, stones, buttons, beads, pom poms, or other similar items to decorate your snow playdough

What to Do
Making the Playdough
Begin by making a batch or two (we typically make one batch per child) of our one-pot playdough. This is our tried and true recipe that is super easy to make.
Or, if you prefer to make your playdough in a stand mixer, we have a super easy playdough recipe to share with you! You can find that recipe here.
After you’ve made your playdough, allow it to cool for a few minutes and then carefully plop it onto a sheet of parchment paper.
While it cools, you can take out the additional supplies needed for this snow playdough activity and place them in your divided tray.
After you’ve made this playdough, discover these ideas for Winter sensory play for toddlers from a fellow blogger.
Once your snow playdough has cooled enough to handle, simply make a bit of an indentation in your playdough, add in several drops of snow flurries essential oil in the middle of your playdough, and fold your playdough over and over until the oil has been incorporated.

Once your playdough has been scented, place it into your divided tray, along with the other materials, and invite your child to play.
We made a simple invitation to play and set out some glass stones, pom poms, rolling pins, cookie cutters, and gems.
Miss 17 months, Miss 4 years, and Miss 7 years all had a blast making and decorating playdough snowflakes. So fun!

This playdough smelled SO good!
So fresh but not overpowering at all.
I love that the oil blend is kid-safe too, so I don’t have to worry about the kids playing with it.
If your little ones are like mine and like to save their playdough creations, simply place their creations on a baking sheet or other flat surface and allow them a few days to dry.
Once they’ve dried, you’ll have wonderfully scented playdough snowflakes to display or play with {they make great play kitchen food). 🙂
We also designed a set of playdough mats that would pair perfectly with this snow playdough. Check them out HERE.
