Friendly Physical Science: Textbook Review

The textbook contains 22 lessons on subjects such as:
- Measurement: length
- Surface area
- Volume of regularly-shaped objects
- Volume of irregularly-shaped objects
- Mass
- Density
- Buoyancy
- Energy
- Time and speed
- Newton’s laws of motion
- Work and simple machines: the lever
- Simple machines: the wheel and axle
- Simple machines: the inclined plane, wedge, and screw
- Pressure
- Magnetism
- Electricity
- Electromagnetism
- Light
- Sound
- Heat energy
- Basic Chemistry
The textbook includes helpful diagrams as well as some photographs scattered throughout.
Each lesson guides you through the subject and (most) end with a lab activity (such as finding the mass of at least five different objects) and a challenge (such as constructing a container that can hold at least 1 kilogram of table salt).
The lessons incorporate real-life connections, such as how simple machines can be used to reduce the amount of energy exerted and how they help in all sorts of situations, for example, replacing a flat tire.
Questions are asked throughout the text to engage your child as they read. In addition, a student workbook is included that worksheets to accompany the lessons.
In the tests and workbook solutions manual, tests for each lesson are included as well as the answers.
In addition to the three books, video lessons are also supplied. It’s easy to access them via your web browser; all you will need is a log in and password, both of which will be emailed to you after you’ve purchased.
Their video lessons start with a review of the previous lessons – a great way to reinforce the lessons to your child. Then, the lesson is taught via a video with the instructor writing on the screen just as if you were in the classroom and he was writing on the chalkboard.
You can also see the instructor in the bottom corner of the screen which really adds to the experience.
The videos are an invaluable addition to the textbook and are incredibly helpful, especially if physical science isn’t your forte. Even if you are well versed in the subject, the videos are a great way for your child to work on their studies without needing you to be as hands-on; providing you with an opportunity to help your other children with their studies.
The videos do not expire, unlike some online programs, so there is no need to feel rushed to work through the lessons should something arise that would cause you to need more time. I so appreciated this!
I recommend Friendly Physical Science as a wonderful resource! Miss 12 enjoyed the textbook and video lessons.
