“Thermals are columns of air that rise in the atmosphere. Large birds, like raptors and vultures, use thermals to soar and glide for a long time. They ride thermals to gain altitude while conserving energy. Some birds like the Andean Condor only flap their wings during takeoff and when they land. They rely on thermals to carry them as they look for food.”
