If your child loves building, inventing, experimenting, and asking endless “how does this work?” questions, the iBrick STEM subscription for ages 9–12 may be one of the more interesting hands-on STEM programs available right now.

Unlike traditional building kits that get assembled once and forgotten on a shelf, iBrick takes a different approach. The program combines one brick kit that works with popular brick-building systems alongside a full year of digital STEM lessons, engineering missions, building challenges, and problem-solving activities.

For homeschool families especially, that combination of reusable materials and ongoing guided learning can be appealing.

But is it actually worth it? Does it keep kids engaged long-term? And is it educational enough to justify a yearly subscription?

Here’s an honest look at how iBrick works, what families should know before buying, and who this STEM subscription is probably best for.

What Is iBrick STEM?

iBrick STEM Subscription for ages 9–12 is a subscription-based STEM building program designed for children ages 9–12. They do offer subscriptions for different ages.

The program includes:

  • one brick kit that works with popular brick-building systems
  • weekly engineering projects
  • video lessons
  • digital building instructions
  • STEM challenges
  • and creative missions focused on problem-solving and critical thinking

Each week, kids unlock a new activity through the online platform. Lessons typically include:

  1. Building a new model
  2. Learning about a STEM topic
  3. Completing creative challenges related to the build

The company describes it as “one kit, endless models,” because children continue reusing the same pieces for new projects throughout the subscription. I love that!

What Makes iBrick Different From Regular Building Sets?

One of the biggest differences is that iBrick focuses more on STEM learning and engineering thinking rather than simply following instructions to build a display model.

Many traditional building sets are:

  • One-time builds
  • Themed around characters or collections
  • Mainly focused on the finished result

iBrick is more focused on:

  • Experimentation
  • Engineering concepts
  • Problem-solving
  • Creative thinking
  • Hands-on STEM exploration

The builds may include:

  • Vehicles
  • Machines
  • Wind turbines
  • Animals
  • Moving creations
  • Engineering-style projects
  • We made the snow-mobile!

This makes the experience feel more educational and open-ended compared to many standard building kits.

Do You Get New Bricks Every Month?

This is probably the MOST important thing parents should understand before purchasing.

No — the subscription does NOT send new physical brick kits every month.

Families receive one main brick kit that is used for all of the projects throughout the subscription.

What changes each week is the digital content:

  • New builds
  • New lessons
  • New engineering missions
  • New STEM challenges unlock online

This is great for families who:

  • Dislike clutter
  • Do not want piles of unfinished kits
  • Want long-term value from one set of materials

Is iBrick Good for Homeschooling?

Honestly, this may be where iBrick shines the most.

Hands-on STEM resources can sometimes require a lot of parent prep:

  • Gathering supplies
  • Printing instructions
  • Planning experiments
  • Finding age-appropriate projects

iBrick simplifies so much of that.

The weekly lessons are already organized, and the reusable brick kit means families do not constantly need to purchase extra materials. Plus, it includes a storage box that is durable and makes it easy to put all the bricks back when not in use.

For homeschoolers, this can work well as:

  • STEM enrichment,
  • Independent learning time
  • Engineering practice
  • Rainy day learning
  • Summer learning activities

The flexibility is also helpful because families can move at their own pace rather than keeping a strict classroom schedule.

Even if you aren’t homeschooling, iBrick is great for use after school, on the weekends, or during the summer.

What Skills Does iBrick Help Develop?

According to the company, iBrick is designed to encourage:

  • Creativity
  • Critical thinking
  • Problem-solving
  • Engineering skills
  • STEM understanding

Hands-on activities like these may also help children practice:

  • Spatial reasoning
  • Persistence
  • Following instructions
  • Experimentation
  • Independent thinking

One thing that stands out about the program is the focus on challenges and creative missions instead of only following instructions exactly.

That problem-solving aspect may appeal especially to kids who enjoy inventing or modifying builds on their own.

Does iBrick Require Screen Time?

Yes, iBrick uses an online platform for:

  • Digital instructions
  • Video lessons
  • Weekly challenges

Families looking for completely screen-free learning may want to consider that before purchasing.

However, this is not passive entertainment-style screen time. Kids are actively building, experimenting, and interacting while following the lessons.

For many children, the visual instruction style may actually make independent learning easier.

One thing my children thought was really neat was being able to turn, spin, and rotate the builds directly on the instruction page. It made the instructions much easier to follow and helped them see how everything fit together.

I also loved that the program encourages creative thinking instead of just building a model. For example, the snowmobile challenge asked kids to figure out how to improve the grip on hard floors. The interactive character walks them through the challenge.

We also enjoyed the life in the snow lesson.

iBrick is so much more than just building with bricks — it’s interactive, educational, and genuinely keeps kids thinking and experimenting.

Final Thoughts on iBrick STEM for Ages 9–12

We love iBrick! Even my older kids (ages 13 and 15) love it!

The biggest strength of the program is probably the combination of:

  • Reusable building materials
  • Structured weekly learning
  • Engineering-style thinking
  • Creative problem-solving

It seems especially well-suited for homeschool families and curious kids who enjoy figuring things out through hands-on experimentation.

The biggest thing to remember before buying is this:

You are mainly paying for the ongoing STEM lessons, engineering challenges, and educational platform — not monthly shipments of new bricks.

For the right child, that may actually make the subscription more valuable over time. And when you think about the value of this and that it provides an entire year of material, I’d say this program is definitely worth it!

And honestly… if a STEM activity keeps kids building, thinking, experimenting, and learning without immediately asking for another YouTube video five minutes later? That already feels like a parenting win. 😂

My children especially loved that many of the builds actually moved and included gears. They had so much fun experimenting while learning about things like gear ratios without it feeling overly ‘school-like.’ The instructions were also easy to follow, which made it less frustrating and helped them work more independently.
