If you have a middle school, high school, or college student who is interested in the medical field, Medical Investigation 101 is definitely worth looking into. Medical Investigation 101 is a book to inspire your interest in medicine and how doctors think. To see our full review + lots of photos, please continue reading below.

Medical Investigation 101 invites students to try out a career in medical science. Throughout the book, they will learn about medical specialties and the wide array of healthcare team careers.

This unique set of books includes:

  • Student textbook
  • Student workbook
  • Teacher’s guide

You can also purchase each book separately if you’d prefer.

Students will be introduced to the medical mysteries doctors confront each day and try their hand at solving them on their own.

Students will also learn some basic medical terminology and discover how doctors analyze and solve medical puzzles.

Within the student workbook, students will find assignments for each chapter; including vocabulary research, reinforcing word matches, and crossword puzzles.

Together, Drs. Hill and Griffith, the authors of the textbook, share with their readers over fifty years of medical and teaching experience. Actual students have tested these lessons and endorsed the experience with remarkable enthusiasm.

Even if your student isn’t interested in the medical field, these books are full of helpful information for everyday life.

One of the aspects of the books that I really enjoyed was that they stressed that you are not alone in helping your patients. There are many other professionals in the medical field that you can look to for help. When physicians ask other physicians for help, they call that “making a referral.” Part of your job as a medical professional is knowing who to refer your patient to if you don’t know the answer or if another professional can assist them more thoroughly.

Page 17 in the textbook gives an example of an 11-year-old who fell on her right wrist while playing soccer. She came to you for evaluation and treatment. An x-ray showed a small fracture and she was placed in a cast. Once the cast was removed, another x-ray showed the fracture healed well but the girl complained that her wrist remained stiff and weak. Who might help with this situation?

The book is full of real-life examples such as this, which is hugely beneficial to help the student get into the mindset of a physician.

Oh, and in case you were curious, if the 11-year-old described above was your patient, you would need to refer her to a physical therapist for further treatment. 🙂

The textbook covers subjects such as:

I found the book very easy to read and as someone who has never really been interested in the medical field – I found it very interesting and informative.

I would highly recommend this book to those interested in the medical field and even those who aren’t!
