Building Blocks of Science book 3 introduces students to the five core scientific disciplines of chemistry, biology, physics, geology, and astronomy. With Building Blocks of Science, students learn science in a sequential order using an upward-spiral teaching method where disciplines are repeatedly visited and built upon over months and across grades. To see a few sneak peek photos of the inside of book 3 (for grade 3), please continue reading below.

The study bundle includes three softcover books:

  • A full-color student textbook that your child reads to learn the building blocks of science
  • A laboratory notebook that guides your child through real data-driven, hands-on experiments
  • A teacher’s manual that contains information about how to set up the laboratory experiment and lists the materials needed

Each chapter provides an easy-to-digest lesson – especially perfect for those who struggle with science. If you or your child’s eyes tend to glaze over when learning about science – this may be the curriculum for you. I found the lessons easy to understand and enjoyed how the author made each lesson relatable to real-life situations.

While the chapters do not go that in-depth for each topic, they do provide a good foundation and if you notice that your child is particularly interested in a particular subject, it would be easy enough to search online for additional books or activities on that particular subject.

After reading a chapter in the student textbook, we moved to the laboratory notebook and worked on the coordinating experiment. I find it very beneficial to learn by doing as well as reading, so I appreciated that this additional opportunity to learn was provided.

Admittingly, I am not a huge science buff and the thought of setting up elaborate science experiments gives me just a bit of anxiety. Fortunately, the experiments in the book were easy to set up and most used items you likely already have at home.

The kids had a blast (they LOVE science experiments!!) and didn’t even mind it all that much when I had them record their hypotheses and findings in the laboratory notebook. This science set is a must-have and would pair well with The Building Blocks books.

The teacher’s manual was helpful in that it provided examples of possible answers as well as suggestions on how to work through each chapter.

Miss 8 (as well as Miss 5) and I enjoyed working through The Building Blocks of Science. It didn’t include more than just a few real-life images (most of the images were cartoon graphics) but it didn’t really seem to take away from the educational aspect, in my opinion.

We’re really struggled with the Building Blocks of Science 3 curriculum! (I left a very complete review on the Timberdoodle website.) We never could get any results for experiment # 20! Did anyone else have trouble with this or any of the other experiments?
