Want a fun way to learn about volcanoes? Need a fun activity for the kids? This volcano playdough mat combines fun and education!
Volcanoes are fascinating and powerful. Read below to learn more volcanoes!
Parts of a Volcano
🌋 Magma Chamber – Deep underground, molten rock (magma) collects in a chamber, waiting to rise to the surface.
🌋 Main Vent – The main pathway through which magma travels upward, eventually reaching the top of the volcano.
🌋 Crater – The bowl-shaped opening at the top of the volcano where lava, ash, and gases escape during an eruption.
🌋 Lava Flow – When magma reaches the surface, it’s called lava. Lava flows down the sides of the volcano, creating new land as it cools and hardens.
🌋 Ash Cloud – When a volcano erupts explosively, it sends ash, gas, and tiny rock particles high into the sky, forming a huge cloud. This can block sunlight and travel long distances.
🌋 Cone – The actual shape of the volcano, built up over time by layers of hardened lava and ash. Some cones are steep (like stratovolcanoes), while others are more spread out (like shield volcanoes).
🌋 Side Vent & Fissures – Sometimes, magma finds other ways to escape, creating smaller eruptions on the sides of the volcano.
Volcanoes can be active (erupting or showing signs of activity), dormant (sleeping but could wake up), or extinct (done erupting forever).
