As you may know, we’re big fans of dough- playdough, salt dough, you name it. There’s just something to say about a freshly made bowl of playdough or salt dough, just begging to be made into something unique.

What You’ll Need

  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cup
  • Mixing spoon
  • Cookie cutter
  • Rolling pin
  • Oven safe bowl
  • Cookie sheet
  • Paint
  • Paint brush
  • Jewels, glitter, glue, any additional items to decorate bowl (optional)

What to Do

This year, why not make Mom her own little flower bowl for Mother’s Day from a few simple ingredients. Mom can use it for jewelry, small mementos, or simply as something to display on its own. We’re sure she’ll love it! Of course, this craft would be perfect to give any day of the year as well. 🙂

Making the Salt Dough:

First, prepare a batch of salt dough. For this, combine together 2 cups flour, 2 cups salt, and 1 cup water. If the dough is too dry, simply add a bit more water. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour.

Making the Bowl:

Once the dough has been prepared and has reached the desired consistency, lightly flour your work surface and rolling pin and roll out the dough to approximately ¼” thick. Next, select your cookie cutter. Hearts, flowers, stars, and even simple circles all make great bowl shapes. Once the dough has been cut out, select an oven-safe bowl or small oven-safe glass vase, turn it upside down, and place the cut-out dough evenly across it. Place the bowl and dough in a preheated 250-degree oven for about 1-2 hours. Please note, baking time will vary depending on oven and thickness of dough. Check periodically to ensure the dough does not burn. Once the dough has hardened, remove from oven and allow to cool.

Quick Tips:

* If your dough is difficult to remove from your work surface (once you have rolled it out and cut out its shape), use a floured metal spatula or business card to carefully remove it without damaging the shape of your dough.

* If your cookie cutter is not quite as large as you’d like, simply roll out your dough a little thicker, cut your dough using the cookie cutter, and carefully roll out your dough cut-out from the middle to the outside. This will make your dough cut-out slightly larger, ultimately resulting in a larger bowl size.

Decorating the Bowl:

Once the dough has cooled, carefully remove it from the oven-safe bowl or vase you used to shape the dough during the baking process. Now your bowl is ready to decorate! You can decorate your bowl with paint, glitter, jewels, or any items you desire. Once decorated, set your bowl aside to dry.
