How to Make a Paper Plate Aquarium Craft (Free Printable Template for Kids!)
Are your little ocean lovers ready for a fun and easy underwater adventure? This Paper Plate Aquarium Craft is the perfect hands-on activity to spark creativity while learning about sea life. Plus, I have a free printable template to make this craft even easier for you!
Why You’ll Love This Craft
✔ Simple & Fun – Perfect for preschoolers, kindergarteners, and elementary-aged kids.
✔ Great for Learning – Teach kids about different sea creatures while crafting.
✔ Low Mess & Budget-Friendly – Uses common household supplies.
✔ Includes a Free Printable Template!
Supplies You’ll Need:
- 2 paper plates
- Blue paint (or blue construction paper)
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
- Clear plastic wrap or a sealable bag (for the “aquarium glass” effect) (we used a gallon sealable bag)
- Printable sea creature template (download below)
- Markers, crayons, or colored pencils – or, these (they give buttery-smooth coverage)
- Optional: Glitter, sequins, or tissue paper for extra decoration
Instructions:
1. Paint the Paper Plate
Paint the inside of the paper plate blue to create an ocean background. Let it dry completely. If you prefer, glue blue construction paper inside instead!
2. Cut Out the Aquarium Window
Carefully cut a large circle out of the center of another paper plate. This will be the front of your aquarium.
3. Decorate the Background
Print and cut out the sea creatures from the free printable template. Let your kids color them and glue them onto the blue-painted plate. You can also add some gems or construction paper to decorate your aquarium more.
4. Create the Aquarium Effect
Tape or glue a piece of clear plastic wrap or a gallon bag to the back of the front plate to create a see-through effect, just like an aquarium! We used hot glue to attach ours.
5. Assemble the Aquarium
Glue or tape the front plate (with the plastic wrap) over the back plate to enclose your underwater scene. Again, we used hot glue to attach them.
6. Add Extra Details
Want to make it even fancier? Sprinkle some glitter for a bubbly effect or glue small pebbles at the bottom for a real aquarium feel!
