Spring is here, and that means it’s time for all things Easter! If you love decorating Easter eggs but want a fun, hands-on alternative to traditional dyeing (or just want to make more crafts), these DIY paper mache easter eggs are perfect.

They’re easy to make, a little messy (the kids will love these but so will you!), fun, and they turn into the most adorable keepsakes.

Plus, this craft is a great way to let kids explore painting and creativity while getting a little sticky with glue (because let’s be honest, kids LOVE the mess factor!).

How to Make Paper Mache Easter Eggs

Step 1: Create Your Paper Mache Paste

Mix equal parts white glue and water in a small dish. Stir until smooth. This will be your paper mache paste. You’ll want it thin enough to spread easily but sticky enough to hold everything together.

Step 2: Cover the Eggs with Paper

Tear your printer paper into small strips or pieces. We tore ours into pieces about 2″ x 2″ but you can use whatever size is best for you. Also, in our experience, heavier paper didn’t lay flat as well as thinner paper so we found that printer paper thickness worked best.

Dip each piece of paper into the glue mixture (one at a time) and layer them onto the plastic eggs, smoothing them down as you go. Cover the entire egg with about 2-3 layers of paper for a sturdy finish. Set them aside to dry completely (this can take a few hours or overnight). We did use this to speed up drying time. 😅

Step 3: Paint and Decorate!

Once the eggs are dry, it’s time to paint! Use bright spring colors, pastels, or even metallics for a fun twist. You can leave them solid or get creative with patterns like polka dots, stripes, or hearts (like I did!). Let the paint dry before adding any finishing touches.

For younger children, you could even invite them to decorate their painted eggs with stickers!

Step 4: Seal for Longevity (Optional)

If you want your eggs to last for years, brush on a thin coat of Mod Podge or a clear sealant. This will protect them from scratches and keep the colors vibrant.

  • Glitter Eggs – While the paint is still wet, sprinkle on some fine glitter for a sparkly effect.
  • Stamped Designs – Use small rubber stamps to add cute patterns.
  • Nature-Inspired Eggs – Press dried flowers or leaves into the wet paper mache.
  • Personalized Eggs – Write names or messages on them for personalized Easter gifts!
