How to Make Your Sensory Bin Rice: Step-by-Step

  • Add a few cups of uncooked rice to a gallon bag.
  • Squirt some paint into the bag.
  • Seal the bag, removing most of the excess air before sealing.
  • Squish the rice and paint together until well mixed. Add more and repeat if needed.
  • Pour the rice onto a piece of waxed paper or a tray and allow it to dry (the rice dries fairly quickly – typically about 30 minutes or so but you could let it dry overnight if you’d prefer).

How to Assemble Your Weather Sensory Bin

  • Pour your blue rice into your container.
  • Add shredded paper (sky).

  • Add dyed pasta and garbanzo beans (this is done the same way the rice is dyed). We used this pasta and this to represent hail, snow, and rain. We added a bit of dried pasta to a resealable bag, squirted a bit of paint in, sealed the bag, and shook it around. Then, we placed it on waxed paper to dry.

  • Then, add weather figurines (these are fun because you can hide them in the sensory bin and ask your child to show you five clouds, four yellow symbols, etc.)

Sensory Bin Clean Up Tips

Sensory play can get a bit messy, but here’s a tip: Lay a large sheet or plastic tablecloth underneath the bin to catch any stray rice. Once playtime is over, pour the leftover rice into a sealed container and store it for future play.
