Teaching kids gratitude through a fun craft is a wonderful way to help them appreciate the positive aspects of their lives. Gratitude crafts can be a creative and engaging way to instill this important value. Here’s a simple craft project that you can do with kids to teach them about gratitude. We’ve also included a printable so you can get started with your gratitude craft right away!

The Art Kit’s My Gratitude Tree printable makes it fun to count your blessings! Simply print out the tree (nearly 2 feet tall!) and apples, write or draw what you’re thankful for on each apple, and then paste them on the tree. Display your tree to give you a reminder of all that you have to be thankful for!

You can either print the tree on a large format printer (your local print shop should be able to do this for you) or you can print it at home and easily assemble it. We included both print options in our digital download.

Materials you’ll need:

  1. Cardstock (ideal) or printer paper to print out our gratitude tree and apple template.
  2. Markers, colored pencils, watercolor paints, or crayons
  3. Scissors
  4. Glue or tape
  5. Magazines or printed images (optional)
  6. Stickers (optional)
  7. Decorative elements like gems, ribbon, buttons, or beads (optional)

Steps:

  1. Discussion: Start by talking to the children about gratitude. Explain what it means and why it’s important. Give them examples of things they might be grateful for, like family, friends, health, food, a cozy home, etc. Encourage them to think about their own reasons to be grateful.
  2. Create a Gratitude List: Ask the children to make a list of things they are grateful for. Younger kids can draw pictures, while older kids can write words or short sentences. You can also help them brainstorm ideas.
  3. Decorate the Gratitude Apples: Each item on their gratitude list will become a separate “gratitude apple.” They can paint or decorate these apples using colored paper, markers, paint, stickers, or any other craft materials you have. Encourage them to make each apple unique and colorful if they’d like. We included two different sets of apples – one set with lines that your child can write what they are grateful for and a set of apples without the line that your child can illustrate what they are grateful for.
  4. Cut Out the Apples: Help the kids cut out the gratitude apples. These will be placed on the gratitude tree (the next step).
  5. Assemble the Gratitude Tree: Print out the gratitude (download link below) and assemble it. Color or decorate it with markers, paint, brown paper, etc.
  6. Attach the Gratitude Apples: Have the kids attach their gratitude apples to the tree using glue or tape. Each apple should represent something they are grateful for.
  7. Decorate and Display: Let the children further decorate the tree or the surrounding area as they like. This could include adding a sun, clouds, birds, or any other creative touches. Display the tree somewhere where they can see it often.
  8. Discussion and Reflection: After creating the gratitude tree, sit down with the kids and discuss their apples. Encourage them to share what they’re grateful for and why. This can lead to meaningful conversations about the importance of gratitude in their lives.
  9. Regular Updates: As time goes on, encourage kids to add more gratitude apples to their tree whenever they feel grateful for something new. This will remind them to regularly reflect on the positive aspects of their lives.

This craft not only teaches kids about gratitude but also provides a creative outlet for self-expression. It’s a wonderful way to help them focus on the positive and develop an attitude of gratitude.
