Marbled Paper Hearts {Earth Day Craft}

Shaving cream artwork has quickly become a favorite- if you’ve never created art from shaving cream and paint, we can’t recommend it enough! It can be a little messy but so worth it and so fun. Read on to see how we made these cute marbled paper hearts for Earth Day.

What You’ll Need

Shaving cream (stick with the basic foaming type for this project- nothing fancy!)
Pie pan, cookie sheet, or other shallow container
Paint
Toothpicks (optional)
Watercolor paper or other thick paper
Squeegee
Heart cookie cutters
Paper towels
Pencil

How to Make this Earth Day Craft

Spray some shaving cream into your pie pan or other shallow container. You can either smooth the top a bit or leave it as it is.

Squirt some green and blue paint on top of the shaving cream.

Swirl your colors around with a toothpick or mix them into the shaving cream. Experiment a little; it’s fun to see how each marbled sheet of paper is different.

Place your paper on top of the painted shaving cream and gently press down.

Lift your paper up and turn it over.

Now for the really fun part! Place your paper on a flat surface (we covered our work surface with a sheet of aluminum foil), shaving cream side up, and squeegee the shaving cream off. Next, move your paper to a clean, dry, and flat location and allow the paper to dry. We discovered watercolor paper worked best, while thinner paper had the tendency to curl more. We also noticed it best to squeegee the paper right away and not let the shaving cream sit on the paper too long.

We loved all the different results we got depending on how much swirling of the paint we did, how much of each color we used, etc. Have fun and let your imagination run wild! Once the paint has dried, you may notice a bit of shaving cream left around the sides. Simply wipe any remaining shaving cream off with a paper towel and gather your heart cookie cutter, scissors, and pencil.

Turn your marbled artwork over, trace the hearts, and cut out.

Once you’ve made a few hearts, you could string them on twine to make an Earth Day heart garland. Our little ones decided their hearts need smiley faces, so they added those with colored pencils.
