Art on the Go for Kids
Do your kids love art? Or maybe you need something to keep them entertained while you’re out and about? We absolutely love taking art on the go! Our kids love to draw, especially in the car or while we’re out running errands and we are more than happy to encourage them in their love of art. We typically either bring mini clipboards with paper and pencils or zippered pouches with a few of our favorite supplies tucked inside. Today we’re sharing our zippered pouch art on the go kit as well as our favorite zippered pouch brand that has withstood the test of time. Continue reading for all the details. 🙂

What You’ll Need
- Zippered pouch
- Notebook (5″ x 7″ fit perfectly in our Dabba Walla pouch)
- Colored pencils
- Pencil sharpener
- Washi tape
What to Do
We started with our zippered pouch. We actually purchased our zippered pouch from Dabba Walla Bags about five years ago (and have since purchased several more) and it has held up remarkably well. Dabba Walla makes adorable, high-quality bags (have you seen their kid-sized backpacks?) that will last for years. Once we had our pouch squared away, we selected a flexible notebook that fit inside. You’ll need to bend the notebook to fit inside your pouch so you’ll want something that is fairly flexible (i.e. plastic cover, not cardboard).
Next, select your art supplies for your art on the go kit.
Our guidelines for selecting supplies for our art on the go kit are basically as follows:
- Is it messy?
- Glue – not happening. Washi tape – yes.
- Can it be used in the car (or left in the car)?
- Crayons – no way. Markers – no thank you. Colored pencils – that’ll work.
We do like to mix it up to keep things interesting but we typically include colored pencils (versus crayons) (because you wouldn’t want to forget your kit in the car and find it later with melted crayons inside), washi tape, or maybe an eraser (if we include our erasable colored pencils), and a pencil sharpener.

Don’t forget to include your child in creating their kit; they will likely be more interested in actually using it. 🙂 We like to set a few items out and ask which of those they’d like to include. For example, which colored pencils, or which two rolls of washi tape?
Once you’ve added all your items, zip up your pouch and tuck it away for your next outing.
