With Christmas just around the corner, we've been busily making all sorts of playdough invitations to play (for those of you who follow us at The Art Kit, you know how much we love playdough activities!). Today we're excited to share our gingerbread playdough invitation to play.
Begin by whipping up a batch of our one-pot playdough:
Mix the following ingredients together in a cooking pot:
1 cup flour
2-3 tablespoons cream of tarter
¼ cup salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 tablespoon oil
1 cup water
Once all the ingredients have been mixed, cook them over medium heat while mixing continuously. The playdough mixture will start melting down and then, after a few minutes, it will start to ball up and pull away from the sides of the pot (and your arm muscles will start to ache!); that’s when you know your dough is cooked. It’s okay if some areas are still a bit sticky looking. For the most part, however, it should look like playdough.
Once the playdough has cooled, knead it a bit, then place it in your divided tray along with the other play materials and allow your child to create.
The kids had such a blast with this activity and the room smelled so good! We love using natural ingredients in our playdough recipes.
After making several gingerbread boys and girls, the kids spent hours making gingerbread cakes, which turned into an imaginary baking competition. We just love how open-ended this activity is and it's so great to see where their imaginations take them! No matter how many playdough activities we've done, the little ones always come up with a new creative activity to make out of it.
