Space Galaxy Playdough {Invitation to Play}
This invitation to play is a definite must for any space lover! Even if your little ones aren’t particularly interested in space, they will be once they see this! Our space galaxy playdough set has quickly become a new favorite for us and we were so happy to discover the perfect book to compliment it- There’s No Place Like Space. We’ve all learned so much about outer space since putting this set together and had a lot of fun in the process!

What You’ll Need
1 cup flour
2-3 tablespoons cream of tarter
1/4 cup salt
1 tablespoon oil
1 cup water
Cooking pot
Wooden mixing spoon
Rubber gloves (to protect your hands when applying liquid watercolor to playdough)
Marbles (optional)
Playdough accessories (optional)
Divided tray (optional)
What to Do
Begin by whipping up a batch of our one-pot playdough:
Mix the following ingredients together in a cooking pot:
1 cup flour
2-3 tablespoons cream of tarter
1/4 cup salt
1 tablespoon oil
1 cup water
Once all the ingredients have been mixed, cook them over medium heat while mixing continuously. The playdough mixture will start melting down and then, after a few minutes, it will start to ball up and pull away from the sides of the pot (and your arm muscles will start to ache!); that’s when you know your dough is cooked. It’s okay if some areas are still a bit sticky looking. For the most part, however, it should look like playdough.
Once the playdough has cooled, put your rubber gloves on and add a squirt of black liquid watercolor to the playdough (over some newspaper or something you don’t mind staining, just in case any coloring drips) and knead the playdough until the color is incorporated. You may need to do this a few more times to achieve a darker black color. Once your playdough has been colored, place it in your divided tray along with the other materials and allow your child to play. You could also read There’s No Place Like Space before the kids start playing, or even read it to them while they play. There’s No Place Like Space has quickly become one of our favorite books.
The kids loved adding glitter and stars to the playdough! They really sparkled against the darker playdough color.
They also enjoyed placing marbles in the playdough. We pretended the marbles were nebulas!
The solar system set was probably our favorite aspect of this playdough experience! The planets all had a great feel to them and the colors seemed very realistic and overall we thought they were just a really neat tool to assist in learning about about space and our planets. They also paired well with the book and made learning about space so much fun!
The kids enjoyed pushing them in the playdough, removing them, and then trying to put the correct planet back according to the size of the indent it left. Planet matching with playdough- who knew it could be so fun!
The Space TOOB was another great addition to our space galaxy playdough set!
