What grades is this science curriculum for?
This curriculum is designed for grades 3-8.
For those in grades 6-8, a challenge section is included which will challenge them to do more advanced activities and learn more than those in grades 3-5.
Lesson 30: Properties of Matter
The lessons are engaging, fun, and relatable. I love how they incorporate real world examples. When discussing the properties of matter, for example, the book discussed the main chemicals that naturally occur in food and discussed chocolate, vanilla, and how the sense of smell affects flavor.
Not only will children learn new terms, but they will also analyze their food by testing for oils and starch.
Then, several questions are included that will test children on what they learned and discuss how they can take it further. These thought-provoking questions are a great way to ensure your child is comprehending what they are reading.
The photographs and diagrams are plentiful and add tremendously to the overall quality and beauty of the book.
My children and I learned so much!
We found these facts especially interesting:
- The process of baking yeast brad probably started soon after Babel.
- From page 94, “The first important step, from a chemistry point of view, is mixing the oil and the sugar. The fat molecules in the oil are creamed together with the sugar. In the process of creaming, air molecules are trapped between the fat molecules. This is what gives the cake its soft, spongy texture.”
- An enzyme is a biological substance that helps speed up a chemical reaction.
- And more!
Your child will complete many fun activities, as well, such as:
- Drawing a diagram of the layers of a tree trunk.
- Making sand.
- Demonstrate metallic bonding colored mini-marshmallows.
- And more!
Another feature that I love – and it’s so simple – is that the pages in the teacher’s guide are perforated and three hole-punched so if you choose to remove the pages you need for the day, you can do so and then easily store them in a binder.
