50 No-Prep STEM Challenges Kids Can Do With Stuff You Already Have at Home

STEM Doesn’t Need to Be Complicated (Or Expensive!)

STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) sounds fancy, but trust me—kids can learn STEM skills with junk from the kitchen drawer. No kits, no mess, and no hours of prep required. These quick challenges use things you already have, and they’re perfect for homeschool, classrooms, or just keeping kids busy on a rainy day.

Science Challenges (Try These With Household Stuff!)

  1. Test which liquid melts ice fastest (water, saltwater, vinegar?).
  2. Drop different objects into water and guess which will float.
  3. Put white flowers in colored water and watch them change.
  4. Try to “trap” a bubble inside another bubble.
  5. Freeze toys in an ice cube tray and figure out how to rescue them fastest.
  6. Compare how long it takes bread to grow mold in different spots (fridge, counter, sunny window).
  7. Make a homemade “volcano” with baking soda + vinegar (classic for a reason!).
  8. Rub a balloon on your hair and make it stick to the wall.
  9. Put a cup upside down in water—can you trap air inside?
  10. Test how many drops of water can fit on a penny before it spills.

Technology Challenges (No Devices Required!)

  1. Teach a stuffed animal to “dance” by making up a clapping pattern it has to follow.
  2. Pretend to be a robot—give someone step-by-step directions to walk across the room.
  3. Create a secret code using dots, dashes, or symbols.
  4. Play “if/then” coding: “If I clap twice, then you jump!”
  5. Make a homemade telephone with two cups & string.
  6. Test how far your voice travels through that string telephone.
  7. Create a scavenger hunt where each clue uses a symbol instead of words.
  8. Write your name in binary code using just 0s and 1s (easy charts online!).
  9. Try to give instructions to build a Lego tower—without showing the picture.
  10. Make a simple stop-motion video using toys (just take pictures and flip through them fast).

Engineering Challenges (Household Items Only)

  1. Build the tallest tower you can using only pillows.
  2. Create a bridge from paper and see how many coins it can hold.
  3. Make a marble run from books and paper tubes.
  4. Build a Lego zipline using yarn and test different weights.
  5. Stack plastic cups into a pyramid using only a spoon (no touching with hands!).
  6. Build a boat from tin foil and test how many pennies it holds before sinking.
  7. Create a catapult from a spoon and rubber band—how far can it launch?
  8. Make a cardboard ramp and race toy cars.
  9. Test which materials (paper, foil, fabric) slide best down that ramp.
  10. Try to build a house that can protect an egg from a fall (classic “egg drop” challenge!).

Math Challenges (Fun & Sneaky!)

  1. Estimate how many Legos fit in a shoebox—then test it.
  2. Roll two dice and multiply the numbers—race to see who gets to 100 first.
  3. Time how fast you can stack 10 blocks, then try to beat your record.
  4. Measure everyone’s shoes and graph the sizes on paper.
  5. Weigh kitchen items and order them from lightest to heaviest.
  6. Use a deck of cards to make math problems (draw two cards & add them).
  7. Measure how far your paper airplane flies and compare with different designs.
  8. Count how many jumping jacks you can do in one minute—make a chart for the whole family.
  9. Find objects around the house shaped like circles, squares, or triangles.
  10. Try to guess how many beans (or coins, or buttons) are in a jar—closest wins.

Extra Fun Challenges (STEM + Creativity!)

  1. Design your own board game using paper & markers.
  2. Invent a “new” toy using only recycled boxes.
  3. Make a tiny raft for a toy and test if it floats in the sink.
  4. Build a maze for a marble using books and cardboard.
  5. Create a Rube Goldberg-style machine to pop a balloon.
  6. Design a “parachute” for a toy using a grocery bag.
  7. Try to stack 5 random objects—no glue allowed!
  8. Build a domino run and measure how long it takes to fall.
  9. Invent a new type of paper airplane—can it do tricks?
  10. Create your own STEM challenge and test it on a friend or sibling!

Quick Tips for Busy Parents & Teachers

  • Don’t overthink it: Most of these take 5 minutes.
  • Let kids fail: STEM is all about trying, testing, and adjusting.
  • Add a notebook: Encourage kids to write or draw what worked best.
