National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day: FREE PRINTABLE Coloring Page with Fun Fact!
Did you know that January 14 is National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day?
Did you know? New York kosher butcher and Lithuanian immigrant, Sussman Volk, has been credited with serving the first pastrami sandwich in 1887.
He was given the recipe from a Romanian friend in exchange for storing his luggage. The sandwich became so popular that Volk opened a deli.
A pastrami sandwich typically consists of sliced pastrami on rye bread topped with spicy brown mustard. To make pastrami, the raw meat (usually beef) is brined, partially dried, seasoned with various herbs and spices, and then smoked and steamed.
