How do you teach matching skills?
There are many different ways to teach matching but one of our favorite ways to teach matching is with games. They’re a fun and easy way to teach these important skills.
At what age do children start matching?
Many young children actually start matching their favorite toys at the young age of 15 – 19 months. Playing memory match games can typically be introduced at ages 2-3, although some younger children may enjoy playing as well.
Supplies you’ll need for this mermaid game:
How to play the memory game:
- Print out the sheets, laminate them (optional), and cut out each card. We didn’t laminate them this time – we simply used cardstock and they seem to be holding up just fine but for added durability, laminating them would be a great idea.
- Turn the cards face down, mix them up, and arrange them in a grid.
- Take turns uncovering two cards at a time. If the cards match, keep them in your pile.
- Continue taking turns uncovering cards until all the cards have been paired.
- The person with the most cards in their pile wins.
To round the corners as we did, we recommend this corner punch. It was such a great investment and is used all the time! It works great on everything from printer paper and cardstock to laminated paper. It really takes the printables to the next level! Also, it’s nice not to have to worry about getting poked with those sharp corners.
